49ers Lose Deebo Samuel as Wide Receiver Injuries Mount
Deebo Samuel will miss at least a couple of games with a hamstring injury, adding to growing depth issues for the 49ers.

Samuel Sidelined After Injury in Seattle
The San Francisco 49ers took a difficult hit during their 32-29 win against the Seattle Seahawks. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. hurt his right hamstring with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter. Samuel had favored the leg earlier in the contest, but he stayed down after Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas tackled him on the sideline. Samuel landed on the ball, lost control of it, and could not recover it before the medical staff arrived.
San Francisco ruled Samuel out immediately. Coach Kyle Shanahan said the injury got him pretty good and confirmed Samuel will miss some time. The team expects him to sit out at least the next couple of games and probably longer. Backup linebacker Garret Wallow suffered a hamstring injury in the same game and will miss at least a couple of weeks.
Depleted Receiver Group Faces Major Test
The loss leaves the 49ers missing four of their top five wideouts from the start of the year. Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson are all on injured reserve. Robinson has done conditioning work on a side field, but his practice window cannot open until after the matchup with Washington. Veteran Christian Kirk is also on injured reserve with a calf issue and is not expected to practice this week.
Mike Evans, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks and Jacob Cowing are the only healthy wide receivers left on the active roster. The team also has Will Pauling, Xavier Smith and Malik Turner on the practice squad. Shanahan called the situation a huge challenge, but stated the team has players in the building who can step up.
Defensive Adjustments and Possible Returns
San Francisco faces depth questions on defense as well. Wallow is out, and starting weakside linebacker Dre Greenlaw faces a one game suspension. That leaves rookie Jaden Dugger in line for more playing time, backed up by Luke Gifford and Tatum Bethune. The team could call up Jalen Graham from the practice squad if Greenlaw loses his appeal. Linebacker Nick Martin is close to returning from his hamstring injury and could have his practice window opened soon.
The news was brighter for other key contributors. Defensive end Nick Bosa, fullback Kyle Juszczyk and defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. all have a chance to play this week. Shanahan noted that all three will be evaluated throughout the week.
