Trouble Outside and Inside Anfield

Sunday's match at Anfield between Liverpool and Manchester City saw ten people arrested and a police officer seriously injured. It was the first game for City since their guilty verdict for financial breaches, a decision the club has appealed.

The atmosphere on Merseyside was tense. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the stadium before kickoff. The Manchester City team bus had to use a back entrance to avoid the crowds. Inside Anfield, supporters greeted the visiting team with jeering, angry chants, and banners.

Arrest Breakdown and Police Statement

The hostility was not limited to the stands. Merseyside Police confirmed ten arrests during their operation.

One man was arrested on suspicion of two offences of assaulting a constable. Five people were arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting. Two were arrested for affray, one for being drunk and disorderly and assault, and another on suspicion of throwing items onto the pitch.

At around 6.35pm, as fans left the stadium, a police officer suffered a serious facial injury on Anfield Road during an arrest. The officer went to the hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home.

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin condemned the tragedy chanting. She said that football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football. She noted that police will keep working with clubs to identify perpetrators, hoping the arrests act as a clear deterrent to others.
