Atlanta Locks Down Rising Defensive Star

The Atlanta Falcons are making sure their newest defensive weapon stays put. The team has signed defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. to a four year contract extension worth $78 million, with $46.5 million guaranteed. His agents, Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, confirmed the deal on Wednesday.

Atlanta only recently acquired the 24 year old on August 30. They sent cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth round draft pick to the Chicago Bears to get him. It has not taken long for Dexter to prove his worth in his new home.

Dominating the Line of Scrimmage

Dexter has quickly become one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL this season. He currently ranks eighth in the league in quarterback pressure rate at 20.5% among defenders with at least 50 pass rush snaps. Although he only has half a sack so far, he constantly disrupts opposing quarterbacks.

His presence helps the entire Falcons defense. Atlanta ranks third in the NFL with a 41.6% quarterback pressure rate. What makes this stat even more impressive is that they blitz just 19% of the time, which is the second lowest rate in the league.

Dexter has fit perfectly into defensive line coach Nate Ollie's attacking scheme. Ollie praised the young lineman's approach, saying, "It's a mindset more than anything." He added that players must visualize running in a dark room, saying, "Just play fast, play free. [Dexter is] embracing the mindset."

Filling a Major Void in the Front Seven

The Falcons were looking for help along their defensive front. The team recently lost edge rusher Jalon Walker to an ACL injury and James Pearce Jr. to a suspension.

Dexter brings a proven track record to help fill that void. He was originally a second round pick by the Bears in 2023 and recorded 11 sacks over his last two seasons. Atlanta is banking on him to keep leading their front line for years to come.
