A Surprise Leader at the Top

Barcelona star Raphinha has made a brilliant start to the season in his new central role. But he is not currently leading the race for the European Golden Shoe. Instead, a striker playing in Latvia is holding the top spot.

Joseph Ede Oloko has scored 25 goals in 27 league games this season. He played on loan at Tukums 2000 before returning to his parent club, FK Liepāja. His scoring run has even earned him his first senior callup for Benin. Oloko has five more games left to play before the Latvian season ends in early November.

How the Points System Works

The Golden Shoe is not decided by goals alone. To make things fair, organizers use a points system based on league strength.

Goals scored in Europe's top five leagues are multiplied by two. Goals in mid tier leagues get multiplied by 1.5, and goals in lower leagues like Latvia are multiplied by one.

Because of this, Oloko's 25 goals give him 25 points. Raphinha has scored 12 goals in seven LaLiga matches, which gives him 24 points. The Brazilian striker is just one point behind the leader. Last season, Harry Kane won the award with 36 goals for Bayern Munich, which gave him 72 points.

Raphinha Outpaces Europe's Elite

Raphinha moved into a central role after Robert Lewandowski left Barcelona for MLS side Chicago Fire. The Brazilian has thrived, scoring back to back hat tricks just four days apart.

He has easily outscored other superstars at this stage of the season. Erling Haaland has five goals in five games, while Kylian Mbappé has seven goals in seven matches. Lamine Yamal is tied with Mbappé, with both players scoring seven goals so far.

Many players near the top of the leaderboard play in summer leagues, which run from March to November. This gives them a head start. If Raphinha keeps up his current pace, he could easily take the lead before the winter.
