Bears Weigh Quarterback Options for Falcons Game
Ben Johnson is evaluating his quarterbacks before the Falcons game while Caleb Williams recovers from a hamstring injury.

Uncertainty Under Center
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is not ready to name a starting quarterback for Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. The decision depends heavily on whether Caleb Williams can return from his Grade 2 hamstring strain.
If Williams cannot play, Johnson must choose between backups Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum. Both struggled during a 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Bagent threw two interceptions, finished with 87 passing yards and a 27.4 passer rating, and was benched in the fourth quarter. Keenum entered and completed 11 of 19 passes for 108 yards with an interception. Together, the two backups accounted for four of Chicago's five turnovers in that game.
Evaluating the Backups
A week after saying Bagent had earned the right to be the second quarterback, Johnson would not commit to him starting again. Johnson said the team is still working through the decision and assessing many things. When asked if Bagent could start, Johnson said, "we have three guys that can win games in this league."
The drop in production without Williams has been clear. When he was injured in Week 2, Williams held the third best Total QBR in the league at 85.1 and led all quarterbacks with 107 rushing yards. Bagent and Keenum have combined for a Total QBR of 56.8 and have thrown four interceptions, which is two more than their touchdown total.
Williams Nears a Return
Williams has missed three consecutive games, but he is getting closer to playing. He returned to practice in a limited capacity last Friday and went through an extensive workout on the field Sunday morning before being ruled inactive. Johnson said Williams could return as soon as the Atlanta game.
The Bears also face a quick turnaround after Week 6, hosting the Patriots four days later. Johnson said he has not yet considered whether that schedule will affect Williams' timeline. Johnson noted that Williams is progressing well and wants to get back as soon as the team gives him the green light.
