The Family Feud Deepens

The battle for control of the Los Angeles Lakers has taken another step. Five of the Buss siblings have officially filed their case against their sister, Lakers acting governor Jeanie Buss.

Jimmy, Johnny, Janie, Joey, and Jesse Buss filed their formal opposition on Wednesday. They claim Jeanie's petition to block the sale of the family's remaining shares is legally and factually baseless.

The conflict centers on the family trust's remaining 17.82% ownership stake in the franchise. The five siblings voted to sell these shares to an ownership group led by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger.

The Multi Billion Dollar Sale

Kushner and Iger agreed to buy the Lakers from Mark Walter at a valuation of 12.5 billion dollars. Selling the trust's remaining shares would earn the family trust 2.2 billion dollars.

Jeanie challenged the sale in August. Her lawyer, Adam Streisand, submitted a 97 page petition to stop the deal. The new ownership group is expected to take control of the Lakers after an NBA board of governors vote in November.

A court hearing on the matter was originally set for November 5. It has since been postponed to December 8.

Self Interest Versus Trust Duties

The siblings submitted a 36 page response on Wednesday to counter Jeanie's arguments. They addressed a 2017 court order that Jeanie's lawyer claimed prevents a sale without her consent.

The siblings argue that this previous order does not limit their separate rights to terminate the trust. They contend that Jeanie is acting in her own self interest to preserve her position.

Jeanie has a side agreement with Walter from October 2025 to remain director and controlling owner for five years. The siblings argue that her interest in keeping her status conflicts with her obligations to the trust and its beneficiaries.
