Cougars prove themselves in huge home win

BYU picked up a major 28-24 victory against Notre Dame, who was ranked second in the nation. The win moved the Cougars up to No. 2 in the national picture. BYU led for most of the night, powered by quarterback Bear Bachmeier.

Bachmeier delivered four total touchdowns for the Cougars. He scored two on the ground, threw for one, and caught a 15 yard touchdown pass from Kyler Kasper. BYU converted all four of its red zone trips into touchdowns and converted 8 of 12 third downs against a talented defense.

Staying aggressive despite small errors

The Cougars matched Notre Dame at the line of scrimmage. Neither team recorded a sack, and BYU outrushed Notre Dame by taking 121 yards on the ground compared to 115 for the Irish.

Coach Kalani Sitake kept an aggressive offensive game plan throughout the contest. BYU overcame two third quarter mistakes, including a failed fake punt at their own 28 yard line and a fumbled punt return by Cannon DeVries. The defense stepped up both times, holding Notre Dame to field goals on the ensuing possessions.

With top running back LJ Martin out until November due to a lower body injury suffered at TCU, Preston Rex stepped up. Rex recorded career highs with 10 carries and 66 rushing yards. Bachmeier also led the team with 13 carries.

Shifting focus to the Big 12 schedule

Linebacker Cade Uluave said he fell to his knees and cried after the last play as fans rushed the field. Now the team must travel across multiple time zones to face UCF. The Knights hold a 3-3 record, presenting a clear test of maturity after an emotional night in Provo.

Safety Raider Damuni noted that the team understands how big the win against Notre Dame was. However, he added that the players have bigger goals and did not come here just to beat one opponent.
