The Milwaukee Brewers have made a historic decision ahead of their upcoming postseason run. In a team meeting held before Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the club decided to name Christian Yelich as the first official captain in the history of the franchise.
At 34 years old, Yelich is now in his ninth season with the Milwaukee organization. By receiving this honor, he joins an elite group of active leaders in Major League Baseball. Currently, the only other active captains in the majors are Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals.
Blessings From a Legend
Accepting the captaincy was not something Yelich took lightly. Before he agreed to take the title, he requested that Hall of Famer Robin Yount sign off on the decision. Yount is a legendary figure in Milwaukee, having played his entire twenty year career with the Brewers and leading the team to its only World Series appearance in 1982.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy revealed that Yount agreed wholeheartedly with the decision to name Yelich captain. Murphy added that in Yelich's mind, Yount was always the first true captain of the franchise.
Leadership in the Clubhouse
Yelich's leadership has been a constant presence for the team. Murphy spoke about how the veteran has earned the respect of his teammates over the years. The manager said that everybody knows Yelich is the captain and that anyone who has played with him recognizes the way he upholds the standards of winning and how the team conducts itself.
Although he was named captain on Saturday, the 2018 National League MVP was not in the starting lineup for the game against the Cardinals. This season, Yelich is batting .236 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Postseason Ready
The historic announcement comes as the Brewers prepare for the playoffs. Milwaukee has already wrapped up the National League Central division title and currently holds the best overall record in the major leagues.
With the top record secured, the Brewers have clinched home field advantage throughout the postseason. Yelich will now lead his team into October as they look to make a deep run.
