Commanders Down to Rookie Quarterback After Mariota Injury in London
Marcus Mariota suffered a knee injury against the Colts, forcing Washington to play seventh round rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis.

Mariota Leaves London Game Early
The Washington Commanders faced a major setback in London on Sunday. Quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a right knee injury during the second series of the game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Mariota was sacked by defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore on third and goal from the 6 yard line. His knee appeared to bend awkwardly during the play. He was able to walk to the locker room on his own after visiting the medical tent.
Before leaving, Mariota threw for 46 yards and had a 35 yard run that helped set up a field goal. This injury is a massive blow for Washington, as Mariota was already starting in place of franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels missed his second straight game with a dislocated left elbow.
Rookie Steps Up Amid Mounting Injuries
With Mariota out, the Commanders turned to rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. The seventh round draft pick took his first ever NFL snaps under difficult circumstances.
Washington was already dealing with a depleted roster. Star wide receiver Terry McLaurin was ruled out with a hamstring injury suffered during Friday's practice. The team was also missing starting right guard Sam Cosmi for the second consecutive game.
Mariota is in his third season with Washington and has started 10 games. Just last week, he led the team to a 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, throwing for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Now, the Commanders must adapt to a very young quarterback.
