A Long and Difficult Negotiation

The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren finally agreed on a five year, $200 million contract after a difficult offseason. The negotiations lasted for months, involving disputes over money, power, and respect. Detroit initially offered deals starting around $30 million per year before eventually agreeing to the $40 million annual average.

A major point of tension was Duren's playoff performance last season. After averaging 19.5 points per game in the regular season, his average dropped to just 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds in 14 postseason games. That 9.3 drop in points per game is the third largest decrease in NBA history for an All Star. During negotiations, Duren was frustrated to hear he was viewed as the team's fourth best player.

Acknowledging Flaws and Moving Forward

Despite the tense negotiations, Duren is ready to improve. "Looking in the mirror, I do need to get better," Duren said at the team facility. "I'm man enough to acknowledge my flaws and I'm man enough to acknowledge that I'm not perfect, and I'm also man enough to get my ass in the gym and work on those things and get better."

Duren is only 22 years old. During the regular season, he kept the team afloat when Cade Cunningham was out with a collapsed lung. He became the third player in franchise history to make an All NBA team at his age or younger, joining Isiah Thomas and Andre Drummond.

Other teams showed interest in Duren during free agency, including the Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Washington Wizards. However, the Pistons were not willing to do a sign and trade, and they held the inside track to bring him back.

Building the Future Core

The Pistons are betting heavily on their young talent. Along with Duren's deal, they recently agreed to a $155 million contract with Ausar Thompson. Detroit now has its core players locked down while keeping all of its future draft picks for potential trades.

They will need Duren at his best to compete in a tough Eastern Conference. The Philadelphia 76ers added LeBron James, Tyrese Haliburton returns to the Indiana Pacers, Giannis Antetokounmpo is with the Miami Heat, and the New York Knicks remain strong.
