Detroit Red Wings Rally Against Offseason Drama and Bad Start
The Detroit Red Wings are attempting to move past offseason drama and a slow start to the new NHL season.

Offseason Drama Hits Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings faced a wild offseason before the new campaign even began. Dylan Larkin requested a trade in June and was stripped of his captaincy. General manager Steve Yzerman abruptly stepped down in July. Shawn Horcoff took over as interim general manager just two days before training camp opened in late September.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson remained unsigned and headed home to Sweden after making his own trade request. Veteran Patrick Kane left for Chicago in free agency. Fans even booed Larkin during pregame introductions before the home opener.
Struggles on the Ice
Things have not gone smoothly on the ice. Detroit missed the playoffs for a tenth straight year in 2025-26 and started this season 0-2 at home. They dropped a 2-0 shutout to New York against backup goalie Dylan Garand, triggering chants from fans to sell the team. They followed that with a 3-2 loss to Winnipeg.
Forward Marco Kasper went on injured reserve with an upper body injury suffered against Winnipeg. Detroit signed Alex DeBrincat to a seven year, $91 million contract on Wednesday, but the squad remains near the bottom of the Atlantic division. Larkin returned in game three after recovering from an upper body gym injury. He has five years left on an eight year, $69.6 million deal.
Players Focus Inside the Locker Room
Despite the distractions, players insist they are sticking together. Moritz Seider said it is us against the rest of the world. He noted that the players set the tone on the ice, not management.
DeBrincat added that the roster knows what it can do, but needs to execute better and work for chances. The squad believes better results will come if they stay sharp and ignore outside noise.
