A Major Blow in the Bullpen
The Los Angeles Dodgers have suffered a major loss to their bullpen just before the postseason. Right handed reliever Blake Treinen is out for the rest of the year after injuring his shoulder on Saturday.
The injury happened while Treinen was warming up late in the game. The Dodgers went on to win the matchup 4-3 against the San Francisco Giants, but the victory came at a very high cost.
Treinen felt something on a pitch and made a painful facial expression, according to manager Dave Roberts. The pitcher then stopped his warmup and walked off with an athletic trainer.
Manager Reacts to Injury
Manager Dave Roberts expressed his disappointment after the game. He confirmed that the injury will end the reliever's season.
"It is unfortunate," Roberts said. "He was warming up and it was his shoulder, so I do not know if it was a complete blowout, but really unfortunate." Roberts added that the injury will require a stint on the injured list.
The manager also noted that the issue is a familiar one. "It just popped up," Roberts said. "That was kind of what landed him on the IL before, so it just unfortunately showed its head again."
Roster Moves and Playoff Prep
Treinen is scheduled to undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the damage. In the meantime, the team will place him on the injured list.
This move means the Dodgers will need to add another player to their roster for Sunday's regular season finale. After Sunday, the team will have a five day break before they begin the first round of the playoffs.
Losing Treinen leaves a significant gap in the bullpen as the team prepares for their postseason run.
Treinen's Season and History
The 38 year old pitcher has faced multiple injury struggles recently. He missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Earlier this year, he was sidelined from June 20 until September 2 with right elbow inflammation.
This is Treinen's sixth season with Los Angeles and his 12th year in the major leagues. Before this latest injury, he had put together a solid season.
In 36 appearances this year, Treinen pitched 29 2/3 innings. He posted a 4-1 record with a 3.64 ERA and struck out 31 batters.
