Trade list grows to ten options

Dylan Larkin has widened his list of approved trade destinations to 10 teams. The Detroit Red Wings are trying to find a new home for their former captain following his trade request last June.

Larkin holds a no trade clause in the fourth year of an eight year contract worth 69.6 million dollars, counting 8.7 million dollars against the cap annually. He originally agreed to waive his clause for just three clubs, the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights. A summer move failed to happen because of salary cap hurdles and Detroit not getting the trade return it wanted.

The 30 year old center has now added seven more teams to his list. Those options are the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Utah Mammoth, and Washington Capitals. Larkin is not seeking a move to any Canadian team, even after Montreal Canadiens fans chanted for him during a recent game at Bell Centre.

Strained ties and a lingering drought

Tension between Larkin and Detroit management surfaced when his trade demand became public. General manager Steve Yzerman stepped down during the offseason, leaving Shawn Horcoff in charge on an interim basis.

Larkin reported to training camp, but Detroit stripped him of the captaincy. He returned to the ice on October 6 and posted one goal and two assists over his first six games before facing the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night.

Detroit drafted Larkin 15th overall in 2014. He sits 10th in franchise history with 646 points and took home an Olympic gold medal with the United States in 2026. Still, Larkin has missed the postseason in 10 of his 11 NHL years. The Red Wings remain stuck in the longest playoff drought in franchise history, having last reached the postseason in 2016.
