Ejections on the Opening Play

The NFL action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London got off to an aggressive start on Sunday. Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Bryan Thomas Jr. were both ejected from the game before the normal offense took the field.

The incident occurred on the opening kickoff. Trotter and Thomas began scuffling while the play was still alive. Their altercation did not end when the whistle blew, and the two players continued fighting after the play was over. Teammates and staff had to step in and pull them apart.

Officials gathered on the field shortly after the fight was broken up. They met for several moments to review what happened before officially announcing that both Trotter and Thomas were disqualified for their actions.

High Drama and Erased Points

The fight was not the only major event on the opening kickoff. During the play, Jaguars rookie Josh Cameron caught the ball and sprinted 90 yards all the way to the end zone for what appeared to be a kickoff return touchdown.

That touchdown was completely erased due to flags on both sides. The Philadelphia Eagles were penalized for an illegal formation on the kickoff unit. At the same time, the Jacksonville Jaguars were called for holding on linebacker Branson Combs.

Because of the dual penalties, the 90 yard score by Cameron did not count, and the game remained scoreless while both teams lost a key player to ejections.

Early Disruption for Both Units

The early ejections meant both teams had to adjust their defensive personnel immediately. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was forced to leave the game for Philadelphia, while Bryan Thomas Jr. was sent to the locker room for Jacksonville.

The sequence created a chaotic beginning to the game in London. Between the physical fight, the double ejections, the two penalties, and the nullified touchdown return by Cameron, the opening play provided plenty of talking points before either starting quarterback even stepped on the field.
