Shipley Sidelined by Foot Injury

Philadelphia Eagles running back Will Shipley suffered a partial tear of his plantar fascia during Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury could keep him off the field for multiple weeks.

Shipley earned the starting job in London on Sunday and found the end zone early. He scored his first career touchdown before leaving the game late in the first quarter. Before the injury forced him out, Shipley carried the ball five times for six yards.

Mounting Injuries in the Backfield

The Eagles are now dealing with serious health concerns across their entire running back room. Starter Saquon Barkley missed the game as he deals with a hamstring injury. Primary backup Tank Bigsby is also out, currently on injured reserve after undergoing core muscle surgery.

With Barkley and Bigsby already sidelined, Shipley was the next man up. After Shipley went down, Dameon Pierce took over the primary running back duties. Carson Steele stepped up into the backup role behind Pierce to finish the game.

Ground Game Stalls in London

Losing Shipley early put an immediate halt to the Philadelphia running game. The Eagles rushed for only 22 yards on 18 attempts in the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville. That worked out to an average of just 1.2 yards per carry across the entire game.

Pierce led the team on the ground, finishing with 14 yards on 11 carries after taking over the lead role. Quarterback Jalen Hurts managed only two yards on two carries. Without a steady ground attack, the Eagles could not sustain drives and dropped to 2-3 on the year.

What it means for the next game

The Eagles return home for Week 6 to host the Carolina Panthers, who sit at 2-2 on the season. Philadelphia must try to fix its rushing attack while managing several injuries in the offensive backfield.

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (NFL, Sun, 18 Oct): Philadelphia Eagles win 48%, Carolina Panthers win 52%; projected score Philadelphia Eagles 21, Carolina Panthers 21. Our safest pick: Panthers +8.5.
