Former Man City Chairman Demands Board Resigns After Guilty Verdict

Manchester City are facing a massive crisis. Following a guilty verdict from the Premier League for breaking financial rules, former club chairman David Bernstein has called on the current directors to step down immediately.

The league announced on Tuesday that City were found guilty of all charges relating to a period between 2009 and 2018. League CEO Richard Masters stated that the club systematically broke the rules for nearly ten years. While City plan to appeal, Bernstein believes the board cannot stay in place.

Bernstein, who ran the club from 1998 to 2003, argued that the directors must face consequences now. He stated that if this were any other kind of public company, the directors would have to stand down or be suspended.

Demands for Board Suspension

The former chairman targeted the chief executive and other board members who managed the club during the period in question. He believes they are responsible for everything that happened.

"I don't think the present management can credibly continue," Bernstein said. He described the situation as absolutely terrible and struggled to think of a penalty that would be strong enough.

For Bernstein, waiting for the appeal process to finish is not an excuse to keep the current leadership. He wants action taken against the board right away, regardless of how the appeal turns out.

Allegations of Fraud

The situation could go far beyond sports regulators. When asked in an interview if the club's actions amounted to fraud, Bernstein agreed that they did. He suggested that the matter is so serious that it deserves a full legal investigation outside of football authorities.

He called the findings damning beyond belief. While he admitted he is only putting the thought on the table and is not a lawyer, he believes the scale of the rule-breaking means it must be looked at by outside authorities.

Expulsion From the Premier League

Bernstein is a lifelong fan of Manchester City, but he thinks the club must face the ultimate punishment if their appeal fails. He believes that a simple fine is no longer enough to address the scale of the breaches.

He warned that if the appeal fails, the club he loves must be removed from the Premier League. He expressed worry that a long legal battle lasting a year or two would be the worst outcome for everyone, but insisted that expulsion is the only proper response to these findings.
