Moving On From Top Flight Football

Former England head coach Sir Gareth Southgate has ruled out managing a Premier League team in the future. The former Middlesbrough boss left his role with the national team in the summer of 2024. That decision came after England suffered a 2-1 loss against Spain in the Euros final.

Speaking in an interview on Amol Rajan's podcast, Southgate explained that he cannot see a situation where he returns to top flight club management. He admitted that towards the end of his spell with England, he stopped enjoying victory. He said that by the end he did not enjoy wins for longer than a couple of minutes.

New Experiences Outside The Game

Since stepping down, Southgate has spent little time watching football. He went to the Champions League final in 2025 and also attended the FA Cup final to watch Crystal Palace win their first trophy. He confirmed that he has not visited a football stadium since those matches.

For 37 years, his sense of personal worth depended on whether his team won or lost every Saturday. He explained that his desire to be involved in the sport has changed over the past 18 months. Southgate has enjoyed meeting politicians, spending time with people in the media industry, and travelling the world to learn new things. He has also worked on a BBC documentary focused on helping young men and boys talk about their mental health struggles.

Missing Purpose In Club Roles

Southgate feels that managing at club level lacks the special purpose he experienced while leading England. He stated that he is not interested in managing simply for survival or a high salary.

He questioned whether club owners share his values and if teams can actually win. Southgate noted that he would rather make a larger impact in other areas of his life instead of spending his days at a training ground. He added that he gave everything he had to football and now wants a different period in his life.

Repercussions Of Financial Rules Case

Southgate also shared his thoughts on Manchester City. Last month, an independent panel found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules across a number of years. Manchester City have appealed that decision.

Southgate stated that there are no winners in the situation and that none of it benefits football. Having attended boardrooms and meetings with UEFA and FIFA, he noted how complex these issues are. While acknowledging that fans might demand harsh punishments, he insisted that the overall outcome is bad for the sport.
