Giants Build New Plan Around Jameis Winston While Scouting Outside Quarterbacks

Winston Takes the Reins with a Fresh Plan

Jameis Winston is set to make his first start of the 2026 season for the New York Giants against the Tennessee Titans. This comes after starter Jaxson Dart underwent surgery on Friday to repair the meniscus and MCL in his left knee. Dart is out for the regular season, although head coach John Harbaugh did not rule out a return if the team makes the playoffs.

Winston struggled in Week 2 after replacing Dart in a 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards with one interception. The Giants believe those struggles happened because the game plan was built for Dart.

For Sunday, the team has adjusted. They threw out about 20 percent of their offense and built a plan that fits Winston's pocket passing style. With rain and wind expected, the team plans to rely on a power running game led by Cam Skattebo. Jake Haener will serve as the backup after being signed from the practice squad.

Harbaugh Keeps Options Open for New Passer

The Giants are actively looking at adding another veteran quarterback, and how hard they push will depend on how Winston plays on Sunday. Harbaugh stated that "all options are open" as the team evaluates their next move.

Several names are on the list of potential additions. Free agent Jimmy Garoppolo is a strong candidate. The Giants have had conversations with his camp, though he has not worked out for the team yet. Signing Garoppolo would not cost the Giants a draft pick. He has considered retirement but is open to playing if he can join a 53 man roster.

Scouting Other Quarterback Targets

If the Giants decide to make a trade, they have a few targets in mind. Gardner Minshew II of the Cardinals is an option who previously played under Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Justin Fields of the Chiefs is another option who currently plays in a similar system.

The team is also looking at Mac Jones of the 49ers, who went 5-3 last year while filling in for Brock Purdy. Minnesota Vikings third string quarterback J.J. McCarthy is another player the Giants have researched. Finally, Brandon Allen, who spent training camp with New York, remains a possibility.
