Iraola backs Barcola to deliver for Liverpool despite France criticism

Iraola defends summer signing
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has backed summer signing Bradley Barcola following criticism of his recent performances for France. The 24 year old forward received harsh reviews after Monday's 4-1 Nations League victory over Belgium. French media took issue with his lack of end product after he created one chance and took two shots during the match.
Iraola quickly dismissed suggestions that the former Paris St Germain player is struggling for form. He said that people judge attackers too harshly whenever they do not score goals.
Injuries create opportunity
Iraola stressed that getting into scoring positions is what matters most. He recalled a match against Atletico Madrid when Barcola missed clear chances, stating he wants the player to keep putting himself in those spots.
The manager's support comes at an important time. Senior forwards Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are both absent with injury ahead of Sunday's visit of Manchester City. Iraola needs Barcola to reproduce the displays he regularly delivered in France.
Adaptable role in attack
Because of the injuries in attack, Barcola could be asked to play as a centre forward. That is an unfamiliar role for him, but Iraola believes he has the talent to handle it.
Iraola mentioned that Barcola has played mostly as a left winger, but has also spent time as a right winger and striker. He described him as a top player who can cover all three positions up front and remains a valuable asset for the squad.
