Jalen Hurts Sidelined for Season Following Blood Clot Diagnosis
Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the season after doctors found blood clots in his lungs, putting him on blood thinners for three months.

Hurts placed on injured reserve
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season. Doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs, leading the team to place him on injured reserve.
Hurts has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, according to a statement released on Monday by the team and his agent, Nicole Lynn. The condition means a blood clot formed in his legs and traveled into his lungs. He will undergo treatment involving blood thinners that will sideline him for at least three months.
Timeline of the diagnosis
The issue first surfaced during the trip overseas. Hurts had an ultrasound in London before the Eagles played the Jacksonville Jaguars. An October 15 team statement revealed an initial diagnosis of a superficial blood clot. Doctors decided at the time that physical activity was important and cleared Hurts to play in that game.
A follow up ultrasound last Wednesday revealed that the clot had moved. Hurts was immediately ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Panthers and subsequently landed on injured reserve.
Dr. Jordan K. Schaefer, an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan who specializes in blood clot disorders, noted that superficial clots carry a risk of extending into the deep vein system and traveling to the lungs. Schaefer, who has not treated Hurts, explained that contact sports are avoided while on blood thinners due to the danger of bleeding. The standard treatment requires at least three months of anticoagulants before doctors reassess the patient.
What it means for the next game
Philadelphia now faces a challenging matchup without its starting quarterback on the field.
Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles (NFL, Tue, 27 Oct): Philadelphia Eagles win 35%, Dallas Cowboys win 65%; projected score Philadelphia Eagles 21, Dallas Cowboys 24. Our safest pick: Over 37.5 points.
The Eagles will have to adjust their game plan with their top passer out of action. The roster faces tough competition ahead while Hurts focuses on his health and recovery.
