Vardy reaches milestone at Turf Moor

Jamie Vardy scored in his 20th straight season on Friday, but his goal was not enough to prevent Burnley from losing 2-1 against Wolves. The 39 year old striker put Burnley ahead in the 20th minute at Turf Moor. He made his trademark run in behind the Wolves defence and finished with his left foot past goalkeeper José Sá.

Wolves fought back to collect all three points from the match. The victory moves Wolves up to sixth place in the Championship table. Meanwhile, Burnley remain in trouble near the bottom, sitting fourth from bottom following the home defeat.

Rise through the non league ranks

Friday's strike was Vardy's first goal in the Championship since April 2024, when he scored against Preston North End while playing for Leicester City. His 20 year goalscoring streak in senior football first began in 2006, when he made his first team debut for non league side Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Before starting that streak, Vardy had been released by Sheffield Wednesday at 16 years old. He worked his way up through non league football, playing for Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town. In 2012, he moved to Leicester City in a deal eventually worth more than £1 million. That fee was a record for a non league player at the time.

Premier League success and returning to England

Vardy spent 13 years at Leicester City, scoring more than 180 goals in over 400 total appearances. He scored 24 goals during Leicester's Premier League title win in 2016. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2019 to 2020 season.

The former England international left Leicester in 2025 and spent last year playing for Cremonese in Serie A. He returned to English football this summer by signing a one year contract with Burnley.
