Joe Musgrove Makes Surprise Return to Padres Postseason Roster

A Surprise Return

The San Diego Padres have pulled off a major surprise for their postseason run. Right handed pitcher Joe Musgrove has been named to the roster for the wild card series against the Chicago Cubs.

Musgrove has not pitched in a Major League game in two years. His last appearance was on October 2, 2024. Shortly after that, the 34 year old underwent Tommy John surgery and spent the next season rehabbing.

The Padres are carrying 11 pitchers for this best of three series. Musgrove is expected to pitch out of the bullpen to help the team.

The Long Road Back

Musgrove originally hoped to return for the start of the 2026 season. However, he faced constant setbacks during his recovery, leading many to believe he would not make it back in time.

Last month, Musgrove finally made four rehab appearances. In his final outing on August 27 in Triple A, he threw five innings and allowed only one run. Despite that strong performance, he struggled to recover after his games. At the time, Musgrove admitted to reporters that he was running out of answers.

Instead of stopping, he kept playing catch and keeping his arm active. He pitched in instructional league games last week, where the reports were highly encouraging. His elbow bounced back well enough to convince the team he is ready to pitch with the season on the line.

The Padres also added 20 year old prospect Ethan Salas to the roster. He is one of three catchers on the squad and is expected to be behind the plate for Nick Pivetta in Game 2.
