Julian Ward Returns as Liverpool Sporting Director

A Familiar Face Returns

Liverpool has appointed Julian Ward as their new sporting director. He replaces Richard Hughes, who left earlier this month to join Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. This is not the first time Ward has held the role. He previously served as the club's sporting director during the 2022 to 2023 season before stepping down for personal reasons.

Ward, who was born on Merseyside, has a long history with the club. He first joined Liverpool in 2012 from Manchester City. Over the years, he worked in scouting, managed player loans, and served as assistant to former sporting director Michael Edwards. Ward is fluent in Portuguese, which has helped him build strong connections in Portugal and South America.

Past Successes in the Transfer Market

During his earlier years at the club, Ward played a major role in several key signings. He helped bring in forward Luis Diaz in January 2022 and was heavily involved in securing a new contract for Mohamed Salah.

He also oversaw the arrivals of Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Darwin Nunez. While Nunez left for Saudi Arabia in 2025, the other signings helped Liverpool win the Premier League under head coach Iraola. Ward also managed the sale of Fabio Carvalho to Brentford for 22.5 million pounds in August 2025, representing a major profit for the club.

Big Decisions Ahead

Ward faces several immediate challenges in his new role. The most pressing issues involve player contracts. Both captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker will see their contracts expire next summer.

Other players like Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez, and Wataru Endo have contracts ending in 2027. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is under contract until 2028, but he recently revealed that the club has not yet offered him an extension.

Ward must also look at squad improvements. Despite spending nearly 750 million euros over the last two years, Liverpool still needs reinforcements. Right back is a concern due to Conor Bradley's serious knee injury, and the squad currently lacks a specialized right winger.

Seeking Stability at Anfield

Liverpool is looking for stability after a period of constant change. Ward is the club's fourth sporting director since 2022, following Michael Edwards, Jorg Schmadtke, and Richard Hughes.

The club is also undergoing off field changes. A consortium called 1892 Holdings, led by Amit Bhatia and including Jeff Bezos, is currently having a 38 percent stake in the club ratified. FSG will still control football operations, and Ward's deep knowledge of the club should help head coach Iraola keep the team on track.
