Extension talks put on hold

The New York Knicks announced on Friday that they are pausing all contract extension negotiations until later in the season. The team stated that its entire focus is preparing for the upcoming year and delivering another season for fans to be proud of.

Karl-Anthony Towns spoke to reporters after practice on Sunday and shared his reaction. He said the decision was news to him and admitted he was very disappointed to say the least. Towns noted that while it is a business, the team still has business on the court to handle.

Money and roster moves

Towns is eligible for a contract extension worth 276 million dollars. The Knicks offered him a four year deal worth 200 million dollars, leaving both sides at a stalemate. Owner James Dolan stated he will not allow the team to go into the second apron.

To avoid that threshold, New York lost backup center Mitchell Robinson to the Celtics on a contract starting at 15 million dollars. They replaced him by signing Andre Drummond for the league minimum of 2.4 million dollars. Swingman Josh Hart, along with reserves Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek, are also eligible for extensions. Towns holds a player option for next season worth 61 million dollars.

Focus remains on winning

Towns was a catalyst in New York winning its first NBA title in 53 years. He made his sixth All Star team and averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists during the playoffs.

Despite the contract stalemate, Towns insisted his focus remains on basketball and defending the title. He explained that his main goal since winning has been finding a way to keep the trophy in New York.
