Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns Clash Over New Contract Extension

Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks are struggling to find common ground on a contract extension as second apron tax concerns loom.

The Gap Between Towns and the Knicks

Karl-Anthony Towns wants to stay with the New York Knicks, but the two sides are far apart on a new contract. Since the finals ended in June, the 30-year-old center has been eligible for a four-year, $276 million extension.

The Knicks have offered a four-year deal worth about $200 million. Knicks owner James Dolan wants to avoid the league's costly second apron tax bracket. Towns is willing to find a middle ground but says the current offers are not there yet.

"I want to do something that can keep the team together and work with the Knicks and also values me," Towns said. "None of those things have come close to happening."

The Case for Both Sides

Towns has a strong argument for a bigger payday. He helped lead the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years, playing in 90% of regular-season games over the last two years. He was also vital in stopping Victor Wembanyama in the finals. His camp can argue he deserves more than Bam Adebayo's $166 million deal.

The Knicks see it differently. Towns is turning 31 next month and has never made an All-NBA first or second team. During the championship run, he was the third scoring option behind Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby. Paying over $50 million a year for a third option is tough under the current salary cap.

What Happens Next

If Towns does not sign an extension by October 19, he can still sign one up until June 30.

If no deal is reached by next summer, he has several options. He could opt into his $61 million player option for the 2027 to 2028 season. He could also opt out to become a free agent, or opt in and request a trade.
