Costly Mistake Ends the Comeback

A late mistake wiped out Alabama's final hope against Georgia on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide fell 20-17 in Tuscaloosa after a personal foul penalty gave the Bulldogs a fresh set of downs to run out the clock.

Sophomore cornerback Dijon Lee Jr. shoved an opposing receiver in the helmet after a 1 yard run. The play would have forced a third down, giving Alabama an opportunity to get the ball back for a tying or winning drive. Instead, the penalty on Lee gave Georgia a first down and allowed the Bulldogs to take three knees to end the game.

Coach Kalen DeBoer said he expects better discipline from his roster. He noted that the staff preaches emotional maturity and never expected that kind of reaction in that spot. Veteran safety Keon Sabb supported his teammate but admitted the play fell short of their standard.

Missed Calls and Offensive Struggles

The penalty was not the only point of frustration for Alabama. With 3:28 left in the game, quarterback Keelon Russell threw a pass into the end zone to Rico Scott. A Georgia defender made contact, but the referees did not call pass interference. DeBoer was seen screaming at officials on the sideline, but he later stated that the team cannot put itself in a situation where the officials come into play.

Alabama also created its own problems throughout the night. Russell threw for 185 yards, which was his fewest in a game this season. The offense turned the ball over once and allowed six tackles for loss. On defense, Alabama gave up 206 yards rushing and allowed Georgia to convert seven of 13 third down attempts.

What it means for the next game

DeBoer made it clear that Alabama needs to get back to work quickly. The team now prepares to go on the road to play against fifteenth ranked Tennessee next Saturday.
