Ward Steps Back Into Key Role

Liverpool have confirmed that Julian Ward is returning to the club as sporting director. Ward is a familiar face at Anfield, having previously held the exact same position during the 2022 to 2023 season before stepping down for personal reasons.

Since leaving his previous post in 2023, Ward has been working as the technical director for Fenway Sports Group. Now, he is back in the hot seat at a time when Liverpool's transfer strategy is under intense scrutiny.

A Proven Record in the Transfer Market

During his first stint as sporting director, Ward was responsible for bringing several major names to the club. He secured the signings of Darwin Núñez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo.

Ward originally arrived at Liverpool from Manchester City back in 2012. Over more than a decade, he worked his way up through various roles. He started by managing scouting in Spain and Portugal, later becoming the loan pathways and football partnerships manager. He also served as assistant sporting director under Michael Edwards.

Ward explained that his history with the club gives him a clear understanding of the job. He said he has a full appreciation of the challenges, demands, and ambitions that come with the position.

Replacing Hughes and Supporting Iraola

Ward takes over the position after Richard Hughes left Liverpool to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. During his tenure after Jürgen Klopp's departure, Hughes brought in Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon welcomed Ward back, saying his knowledge will enhance football operations. Gordon also noted that Ward will provide support to Iraola, who has made a positive impression as head coach.

The appointment comes at an important moment for the club. Liverpool's 2025 transfer window featured the British record signing of Alexander Isak, a move that is yet to pay off. Ward will now be tasked with managing the next phase of the club's squad building.
