Defiance at the Etihad

Manchester City showed plenty of fight on Wednesday night despite falling to a 4-2 defeat against Paris St Germain at the Etihad Stadium. It was the club's first home fixture since an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.

Former manager Pep Guardiola watched from the stands in a clear show of support for the hierarchy, who have appealed against the verdict. Supporters also made their feelings known by displaying a massive "City Til I Die" tifo before kick off.

A strong second half response

The French champions controlled the opening period with goals from Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, and Vitinha to build a 3-0 lead. City manager Enzo Maresca responded with a triple substitution at the break.

Erling Haaland scored twice to become City's record Champions League goalscorer with 38 goals in 41 appearances. Haaland hit the crossbar and Enzo Fernández struck the post, but Maghnes Akliouche grabbed a fourth for PSG past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Ferran Torres later missed a late penalty for the visitors.

Defender Marc Guéhi felt the reaction showed real character. "I think the support that we've had from the fans and the football club has been fantastic and everyone's definitely together in this," Guéhi said. He noted that PSG were more aggressive in the first half, but City won far more duels after the break to give themselves a better platform.
