Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough will return for the 2027 season, while the team faces a big decision on ace Sandy Alcantara.
McCullough Secured for 2027
The Miami Marlins are sticking with manager Clayton McCullough. President of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced that McCullough will return to lead the team for the 2027 season.
McCullough just finished his second year in Miami with an 80-82 record. While the team missed the postseason, he has guided the Marlins to their most wins over a two season span since 2009 and 2010.
Bendix praised the manager, saying that he and McCullough are very aligned. Bendix added that McCullough has helped establish a fantastic culture in the clubhouse. While McCullough is staying, hitting coach Pedro Guerrero will not return. The rest of the coaching staff will remain in place.
Big Decision on Sandy Alcantara
Miami faces a major decision this offseason regarding ace pitcher Sandy Alcantara. The front office must decide whether to exercise a $21 million club option for the pitcher.
Alcantara had a strong season after returning from Tommy John surgery, which kept him out of the 2024 season. He finished this year with a 13-11 record and a 3.87 ERA in 33 starts. He also led the major leagues with 214 innings pitched.
The ace wants to stay in Miami. He even pitched in relief late in the season, earning three saves in three bullpen appearances. Bendix noted that Alcantara is highly meaningful to the organization. The team may even look into using Alcantara and other starting pitchers in relief roles in the future. Eury Perez also made a relief appearance late in the year.
Offseason Injury Updates
The Marlins also provided several medical updates as they look ahead to next year. Closer Peter Fairbanks is scheduled for surgery on October 8. He went on the injured list on September 15 because of nerve irritation.
Center fielder Jakob Marsee is experiencing left elbow discomfort and will see an orthopedic surgeon next week. On a positive note, pitcher Max Meyer, reliever Anthony Bender, and outfielder Owen Caissie are all expected to be ready for spring training.
Meanwhile, rookie pitching prospect Robby Snelling is recovering from elbow surgery. He is expected to return to the field in May or June.
