Trusting the Process
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. has had a quiet start to his third season, but he is not letting the slow beginning shake his confidence. Through the first two games, Harrison has recorded just one catch for 33 yards on four targets. Despite the lack of early production, the receiver is keeping his head held high.
Harrison explained that his confidence does not depend on his results on the field. Instead, it comes from how he prepares. He stated that his daily routine will not change whether he gets zero catches or ten catches. To keep his skills sharp, Harrison continues to catch footballs off the Jugs machine every morning and after practice in the afternoon.
The young receiver admitted he is not surprised by the public reaction to his slow start. He understands the high expectations that came with being drafted by the Cardinals and knows people want to see immediate production.
Teammates and Coaches Speak Out
Harrison is not alone in his confidence. His teammates and coaches are fully backing him. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett made it clear that nobody on the team has lost faith in the receiver. Brissett has been talking with Harrison to offer support, noting that the outside noise can be tough for young players to handle.
Brissett also suggested that the criticism is being blown out of proportion. He pointed out that the team recently signed Mike for 25 million dollars, yet nobody complained when he only had two catches.
Fellow receiver Michael Wilson also defended his teammate. Wilson said he feels for Harrison when he looks at social media, which seems filled with negative talk. Wilson called himself Harrison's biggest fan and said people are simply overreacting to a very small sample size of games. Coach Mike LaFleur added that Harrison is still the same worker inside the team facility, attacking his job every day.
Behind the Slow Start
There are several reasons why Harrison has not put up big numbers yet. The receiver explained that deep routes down the field require many things to go right at once. The team needs proper pass protection, the right defensive coverage, a great route, and a perfect pass.
Defensive schemes have also played a major role. In the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Harrison faced single coverage on only seven of his 32 routes. The Cardinals also faced the Seattle Seahawks, whom Harrison praised as one of the best defenses in the NFL.
While Harrison sees the negative comments on social media, he is determined to block them out. He plans to keep focusing on his team and his preparation to help the Cardinals win games.
