A Strange Out Saves the Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers took Game 1 of the NL Division Series with a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday. The game ended in bizarre fashion thanks to the stadium roof at American Family Field.

In the ninth inning, Ty France hit a high fly ball that struck a railing on the roof. Under the stadium rules, balls hitting the roof in fair territory remain in play. Jackson Chourio caught the ball on the warning track for the second out. Padres manager Craig Stammen said, "We joked about it at the umpire meeting today about what would happen if the ball hit the roof. And it was unlikely, but it happened."

William Contreras hit the game winning home run in the seventh inning off Adrian Morejon. Contreras had been struggling against San Diego, with only one hit in 20 at bats before his 406 foot shot.

Missed Opportunities for San Diego

San Diego took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Luis Campusano drove in Xander Bogaerts, and Jake Cronenworth hit a grounder that brought home Ethan Salas. However, the Padres struggled to capitalize later, leaving the bases loaded in both the second and seventh innings.

The Brewers tied the game in the third inning when Jackson Chourio hit a 420 foot two run home run. At 22 years old, Chourio now has five career postseason home runs, setting a new franchise record.

Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski threw a 104.8 mph strike to Fernando Tatis Jr. to open the game. It was the fastest postseason pitch recorded since tracking began in 2008. Misiorowski left after four innings. Trevor Megill secured the save in the ninth.
