NFL Hands Bills Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson One-Game Suspension
C.J. Gardner-Johnson has received a one-game unpaid suspension from the NFL after spitting toward Raiders players on Sunday.

Discipline Handed Down After Sunday Incident
The NFL has suspended Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson for one game without pay. The league issued the penalty after cameras caught him spitting toward Las Vegas Raiders players during Sunday's matchup.
League officials stated that Gardner-Johnson violated rules that cover acts contrary to the principles of sportsmanship. Buffalo is on a bye this week, so the suspension will sideline him for the Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens unless an appeal is successful. Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera, or James Thrash would handle any appeal hearing.
Halftime Confrontation Leads to Ejection
The incident took place shortly before halftime in Buffalo's 33-30 victory over Las Vegas. Gardner-Johnson was involved in an argument with Raiders tight end Brock Bowers and spat toward both Bowers and center Tyler Linderbaum.
Referee Shawn Smith noted in a pool report that umpire Tra Blake saw Gardner-Johnson spit toward Bowers, leading to an immediate ejection. It marked the second straight week Gardner-Johnson took a 15-yard penalty, and it was his first ejection from an NFL game since 2024.
Bowers seemed unsure about what caused the situation when asked after the game, saying the two were just talking before it took place.
Locker Room Reaction and Public Apology
Gardner-Johnson spoke to reporters after the win, saying there was no specific trigger for his action and admitting the gesture was not warranted. He apologized to his teammates in the locker room and said he needed to be a better veteran.
Bills coach Joe Brady asked Gardner-Johnson to apologize for his conduct. Gardner-Johnson then posted a statement on social media apologizing to his opponent, teammates, and fans. He acknowledged that while competitive drive is part of his identity, there is a line that cannot be crossed, calling his behavior inappropriate and unnecessary.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen said after the game that he was still not clear on what happened. Allen stated that the team captains would watch the video together and decide if the matter needs to be addressed with the roster.
