Union Calls for Answers

The NFL Players Association is demanding a full investigation into how the Philadelphia Eagles handled quarterback Jalen Hurts. The 28 year old passer is expected to miss the rest of the season after doctors found blood clots in his lungs.

The union said the league previously stated it had no plans to review the medical care Hurts received. In a statement on Tuesday night, the union said getting the facts is necessary before anyone draws conclusions.

Timeline of the Injury

Hurts suffered a provoked clot after getting cleated in the calf. An ultrasound in London on Oct. 10 showed a superficial clot. Team staff and local doctors decided mobility was important and cleared him to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.

Hurts stayed at a London hospital late into the night, returning to his hotel at 3 a.m. before playing later that day. A follow up ultrasound in Philadelphia revealed movement in the clot. That led to his diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning the clot reached his lungs.

League and Team Defend Process

League officials defended their medical protocols. NFL chief medical officer Allen Sills rejected criticism and called the care conservative and patient focused. Sills said the idea that any doctor would put a player in harm's way is nonsense.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni expressed full faith in the team doctors. Sirianni explained that player health is always the main priority. He also stated he has complete confidence in backup quarterback Tanner as the team adjusts to playing without Hurts.
