Setback Ends Correa's Season

Houston Astros infielder Carlos Correa will not play again this season. The 31 year old shortstop was trying to return from ankle surgery, but his doctor stepped in to stop the comeback. Pushing to play now could have put his readiness for the start of next season at risk.

Correa underwent surgery on his left ankle on May 11. The procedure was expected to keep him out for six to eight months. He had been working hard to get back on the field and even took live batting practice.

He hoped to rejoin the team last weekend during their series against Tampa Bay. However, he experienced soreness and inflammation in his ankle for two to three days. An MRI revealed that his tendon was not mature enough to handle the workload.

Doctor Calls the Shots

Correa spoke to reporters on Friday about the decision. "He told me, 'I don't feel comfortable with this,' and he pretty much said I'm not going to play," Correa explained.

It is a disappointing end to a long recovery process. Correa said he was at the facility every day once his walking boot was removed. He wanted to be back on the field with his teammates. Still, he is at peace with the outcome because he knows he did everything he could to return.

Now, Correa will scale back his workouts. He will not hit for the next month. His doctor also wants him to avoid any activities that could cause him to turn his foot over. He will get another MRI in two months and expects to be fully healthy for spring training.

Before the injury, Correa was batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. He returned to Houston last summer in a trade with the Minnesota Twins.
