Tar Heels respond quickly to grab lead

North Carolina earned a 21-17 upset win over No. 25 Pittsburgh on Saturday. The victory gave head coach Bill Belichick his first win against a ranked opponent since taking over the Tar Heels. It was also the program's first win against a ranked team since 2023 and its first road win against a ranked opponent since 2020.

Pitt grabbed a 17-14 lead in the second half, but North Carolina struck back on the following drive. Billy Edwards Jr. connected with Shamar Easter on a 75 yard touchdown pass down the seam. That score put the Tar Heels ahead for the rest of the game.

Panthers fall short after late turnovers

Edwards completed 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards. He threw two touchdowns, finding Easter and Jelani Thurman, while throwing two interceptions. Demon June added a rushing touchdown, and Jordan Shipp caught six passes for 93 yards.

Pitt quarterback Holden Geriner made his first collegiate start in place of Mason Heintschel, who is out for the season after tearing his ACL last week. Geriner completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards with two interceptions. La'Vell Wright ran for two touchdowns for the Panthers. Pitt could not capitalize on late chances, turning the ball over on downs at the North Carolina 21 yard line. The loss ended Pitt's bid to start the season 6-0.

Belichick returns and Pitt honors Ditka

Acrisure Stadium has been a friendly venue for Belichick over his career. He compiled an 8-3 record there during his time as an NFL head coach, which included two AFC championship wins. His previous appearance in the stadium came in December 2023.

The Panthers also paid tribute to program legend Mike Ditka, who died on Friday at age 86. The stadium held a moment of silence prior to the national anthem, followed by a video honoring the former three sport standout after the first television timeout.
