Rookie offensive linemen take center stage

The New England Patriots hold a 3-2 record as they prepare to host the 2-3 New York Jets on Sunday. Head coach Mike Vrabel has relied heavily on his fresh draft picks through five games. New England rookies have logged 355 snaps on special teams, trailing only the Colts.

First round pick Caleb Lomu could make his first career start at left tackle this week. Starting left tackle Will Campbell suffered a sprained right MCL in last week's 45-17 win against the Raiders. Lomu stepped in during the second quarter and filled the void. Quarterback Drake Maye praised the 6 foot 6 lineman. Maye noted, "I feel like he owned that and did a good job of anchoring. He's athletic and he's big."

Defensive and tight end production

Other rookies are making strong contributions across the board. Second round pick Gabe Jacas leads all New England rookies on defense by playing 60.7 percent of the snaps. The outside linebacker has accumulated 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one interception after missing early spring activities.

On offense, third round tight end Eli Raridon has caught eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown while playing 40 percent of offensive snaps. He stepped up following a spring injury to Julian Hill. On special teams, linebacker Namdi Obiazor and undrafted rookie Erick Hunter share the team lead with six tackles each.

Key tactical battles against New York

This Sunday brings a tough test against the Jets defense. New York sends five or more rushers on 41 percent of plays, ranking third in the league. Drake Maye holds a 63 QBR against blitzes, which ranks 15th in the NFL.

Left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker goes against his former team after five seasons in New York. Vera-Tucker has played every snap this year and ranks 18th among interior offensive linemen with a 92 percent pass block win rate. Defensive tackle Milton Williams has recorded 11 tackles while drawing increased double teams from opposing offenses.
