Eury Perez threw a one-hit shutout to lead the Miami Marlins to a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
A Masterclass on the Mound
Miami Marlins right-hander Eury Perez delivered the performance of his career on Friday night. The 23-year-old pitched a complete game one hitter to guide his team to a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Perez entered the game with a history of struggles against the National League East champions. He was 0-3 with a 9.76 ERA in six career starts against Atlanta. Friday night was completely different. Perez struck out eight batters, walked only one, and threw 105 pitches.
The only blemish on his stat sheet came at the start of the sixth inning. Atlanta's Sean Murphy lined a single to left field on a first pitch sinker. Aside from that single, Perez was untouchable. He earned his eighth win of the season against 11 losses.
Historical Context and Personal Best
The shutout was just the 11th complete game shutout in the major leagues this season. Major League Baseball is seeing historically low numbers in this category. This year's total is one shutout below last year. The only seasons in baseball history with fewer shutouts occurred from 1871 to 1873.
Perez also recorded the 21st complete game of the MLB season. For comparison, there were 29 complete games last year, and a record low 28 in 2024. This was the first complete game of Perez's career in 68 big league starts.
The victory helped Miami snap a six game losing streak against the Braves. The Marlins now have a 79-81 record, which matches their win total from last season. The team is still fighting to avoid a third consecutive losing season.
Late Runs and a Special Tribute
Miami's offense stayed quiet early but came alive in the late innings. Joe Mack broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning. He hit his 14th home run of the season off Atlanta pitcher Grant Holmes, who took the loss to fall to 10-6. Holmes was making just his second relief appearance of the year after 29 starts.
The Marlins added two more runs in the eighth inning. Heriberto Hernandez drove in a run with an RBI single. Griffin Conine then hit a home run off Didier Fuentes to secure the 3-0 lead.
Before the game started, the Marlins held a moment of silence. The tribute honored former pitcher Jose Fernandez. Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the two time All-Star's tragic death in a boating accident.
