Phillies Secure Postseason Spot After Tense Week

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading back to the playoffs. After a week of tension that nearly saw a historic collapse, the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 on Sunday. The victory sealed the final National League wild card spot on the last day of the regular season.

The win ended a four game losing streak that had fans worried. Philadelphia had a comfortable lead in the standings at the start of September, but a late slump combined with a hot streak from the Arizona Diamondbacks made the final week incredibly tense.

Bats Wake Up and Wheeler Shines

Kyle Schwarber helped spark the team in the second inning with a clutch two run double. He slid hard into second base and celebrated with his dugout, showing the spark that had been missing during the team's recent slide.

Other players broke out of their slumps during the game. J.T. Realmuto ended a stretch of 34 hitless at-bats with an RBI double. Bryson Stott, batting cleanup, hit an RBI double in the first inning. Bryce Harper added a solo home run, and Edmundo Sosa hit a two run shot to help build a 7-1 lead.

Zack Wheeler earned his 14th win of the season. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run on 97 pitches. Jhoan Duran struck out Nick Fortes to end the game and seal the playoff berth.

Playoff Rotation Challenges

While the Phillies celebrated their fifth straight playoff appearance, the delay in clinching comes with a cost. Because Wheeler had to pitch on Sunday, he will not be available to start Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Braves in Atlanta on Tuesday.

The Phillies will have to rely on the rest of their starting rotation to open the series. Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sanchez are candidates to start the first two games. Andrew Painter or Aaron Nola could be called upon if the series goes to a third game.
