Nashville Adds Defensive Depth

The Nashville Predators have made another move to bolster their defensive depth. On Friday, the team completed a trade to acquire defenseman Jayden Struble from the Montreal Canadiens. In return, the Canadiens received a second round draft pick in 2027. This draft pick was originally owned by the Vegas Golden Knights.

This trade marks the second time this week that Nashville has acquired a defender from Montreal. The Predators previously claimed prospect William Trudeau off waivers.

Struble's Role in Montreal

Struble is 25 years old and was drafted by the Canadiens in the second round of the 2019 draft. During his time with Montreal, he appeared in 174 games. In those appearances, he scored seven goals and tallied 35 total points.

Despite those numbers, Struble struggled to get consistent opportunities on the ice in Montreal. He spent time as a healthy scratch over the last two seasons. He was not in the lineup when Montreal played Nashville on Thursday.

Canadiens Look to the Future

Montreal has several young defensemen in their long term plans. Kaiden Guhle is currently working his way back from offseason adductor surgery. Additionally, top prospect David Reinbacher is on the verge of making the jump from the AHL to the NHL.

Trading Struble gives Montreal more draft capital. This could help the Canadiens make other moves before the March 1 trade deadline. Both teams are trying to find their footing early in the season. Montreal currently has a 1-2-1 record, while Nashville has started the year at 2-1-1.
