Pressure Mounts on Carrick as Manchester United Search for Answers
Manchester United are suffering their worst start since 1986, leading to talk over who could replace Michael Carrick.

Troubled times at Old Trafford
Manchester United are enduring their worst start to a league season since 1986. A 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday stretched their winless run across all competitions to six matches. They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle last month and currently sit closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
Manager Michael Carrick called the Leeds result a fresh start, but the 45 year old is facing serious pressure. United already sacked Erik ten Hag in October 2024 and Ruben Amorim in January 2026. With results falling short, attention is turning to who might replace Carrick if a change happens.
Experienced names without a club
Eddie Howe is available after leaving Newcastle United in August. The 48 year old saved Newcastle from relegation in 2021, took them into the Champions League twice, and won the Carabao Cup in 2025. His ability to build teams makes him a sensible option, though some question if he has the huge personality needed at Old Trafford.
Antonio Conte is another available option. The 57 year old won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 and has picked up league titles with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli. He brings a proven winning record, but his fiery style and history of short spells might cause concerns for a long term plan.
Younger options in management
Kieran McKenna, aged 40, is unattached after leaving Ipswich Town this summer. He earned three promotions with Ipswich and previously worked as a coach at United. However, his only season in the Premier League ended in relegation.
Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler is also making waves. The 33 year old joined Brighton from St Pauli in 2024 and recently led his team to a 3-0 win against Arsenal. His active touchline presence and tactical work have earned widespread praise.
