Raptors Lock Up Guard Jamal Shead With Three Year Extension

The Deal

The Toronto Raptors have secured a key piece of their backcourt for the foreseeable future. Guard Jamal Shead has agreed to a three year contract extension worth 24 million dollars to remain with the franchise. His agent, KJ Smith, announced the agreement on Thursday.

This new contract keeps the 24 year old guard committed to Toronto through the 2029 to 2030 season. It represents a rapid rise for Shead, who played his college basketball for Houston. The Raptors selected him with the 45th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft. Just two seasons later, he has locked in a major multi year extension.

Shead's Impact on the Court

Shead earned his new deal by putting up highly productive numbers off the bench. The 6 foot 1 guard finished the 2025 to 2026 season with 354 total assists, which averages out to 5.4 assists per game. That mark was the best in the NBA among reserve players. It also set a new franchise record for the most assists by a reserve in Toronto history.

Beyond his playmaking, Shead proved to be incredibly durable for the team. He played in all 82 regular season games, making him one of only 18 players in the entire league to accomplish that feat. He averaged 6.6 points and 1.7 rebounds during the regular season. Shead also took great care of the ball, finishing fifth in the NBA in assist to turnover ratio.

When the postseason arrived, Shead showed he could handle even more responsibility. He played in seven playoff games and made four starts. During that playoff run, his averages jumped to nine points, five assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
