Ravens expect Todd Monken to bring extra fire in division battle
Baltimore players prepare to face former coordinator Todd Monken as Cleveland hosts a battle for first place.

Ravens prepare for reunion with former coordinator
Todd Monken downplayed the emotional aspect of facing his former team this Sunday. However, members of the Baltimore Ravens locker room believe his quiet stance is just for the public. Monken served as Baltimore's offensive coordinator for three seasons before taking the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns in January.
Baltimore cornerback Marlon Humphrey expects a fiery approach from his former coach. Humphrey said if he knows Monken, the coach will want to kick their tail. Running back Derrick Henry agreed, noting that Monken might not say much to the media, but he definitely talks trash to his own team about beating Baltimore.
A history of big success and sudden drop
Monken left Baltimore nine months ago following a mix of high success and a rough final year. In 2023, he helped quarterback Lamar Jackson earn his second MVP award. The following year, the Baltimore offense ranked first in the league. Things dropped off during the 2025 season. Baltimore finished with an 8-9 record and averaged just 311.8 yards per game, its lowest total in eight years.
Jackson is not expected to play on Sunday because of an ankle injury. Despite reports of discontent during the 2025 season, Jackson sent Monken a congratulatory text after Cleveland hired him. Receiver Rashod Bateman noted that Monken left on good terms. Monken even helped Baltimore hire his successor, Declan Doyle, by speaking highly of the organization during a phone call.
No edge gained from inside knowledge
Cleveland comes into the game with a 3-2 record, which is the franchise's best start in five years. Baltimore leads the division at 4-1. This early season matchup carries big stakes for first place in the AFC North.
Both sides bring plenty of familiarity into the contest. Monken knows the strengths and weaknesses of the Baltimore roster. At the same time, the Ravens are used to Monken's system and playcalling tendencies. Ravens coach Jesse Minter called the familiarity factor overblown. He stated that he does not put a lot of stock into who knows what, choosing instead to focus on execution on the field.
