Road to Recovery

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is working hard to return to the starting lineup this Sunday. He has been recovering from a glute injury that he suffered on the fifth play of the season opener on Sept. 9. The injury initially caused him to worry about his football future.

After spending a night at a local trauma center for tests, a CT scan brought relief. Darnold said the hospital stay was eye opening and gave him a new perspective on life. Now, he is back on the practice field and aiming to play against the Washington Commanders in Maryland. Darnold said he is striving to make that Sunday return but is taking it day by day.

Backup Steps Up

While Darnold was out, backup quarterback Drew Lock kept the Seahawks winning. Lock helped lead Seattle to a 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots, throwing for 187 yards and one touchdown.

Lock followed that up with an impressive performance in a 31-7 win against the Arizona Cardinals. Over the two games, Lock has completed nearly 73 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and no turnovers. Darnold praised his teammate, calling Lock a baller and saying no one in the building was surprised by his success.

The Decision Ahead

Darnold returned to practice on Wednesday on a limited basis. He felt some minor soreness but noted that he felt really good overall. Coach Mike Macdonald stated that Darnold's recovery timeline has shifted drastically for the better.

The coaching staff plans to increase Darnold's workload as the week progresses. Macdonald said the team will likely make a final decision by Friday on whether Darnold will start on Sunday. For Darnold, the final step is gaining full mental confidence in his body so he can play fast without worrying about his hip.
