Sam Fuld Rejects Athletics Offer for Top Front Office Job
Sam Fuld turned down an offer to run baseball operations for the Athletics and will remain with the Phillies.

Fuld Decides to Stay in Philadelphia
The Athletics are still searching for a new leader to run their front office. Sam Fuld received an offer to take over as the team president of baseball operations, but he decided to turn it down. Fuld has formally withdrawn his name from consideration.
Instead of moving to the Athletics, Fuld will stay put with the Philadelphia Phillies. He previously served as the general manager in Philadelphia and will remain in his current position as the team president of business operations.
Other Candidates for the Role
With Fuld out of the running, the Athletics are focusing on other names on their list. Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Taylor Smith remains a top candidate to step into the role and lead baseball operations.
Another finalist for the position was St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio. Cerfolio is not expected to leave his post and should stay with St. Louis. That narrows the field as the Athletics look to fill the vacancy.
A Difficult Season for the Athletics
Whoever takes the job will take over a franchise that just endured a miserable year. The Athletics finished the 2026 season with a 64-98 record. Things looked promising early on, but injuries and pitching staff struggles derailed their campaign.
Across Major League Baseball, only the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels finished with worse records than the Athletics in 2026. The front office saw changes in the middle of that slide when general manager David Forst was fired in August. Dan Feinstein took over and worked as the interim general manager through the remainder of the season.
Relocation Plans and Postseason Drought
The organization also faces major changes off the field. The Athletics currently play in Sacramento, but that is only a temporary arrangement. The franchise is scheduled to move from Sacramento to a new permanent home in Las Vegas following the 2027 season.
On the field, the team has struggled to build winning baseball for several years. The Athletics have not reached the postseason since 2020. Finding the right front office leader will be a major step as the team tries to turn things around before arriving in Nevada.
