Spain Secures Women's FIBA World Cup Bronze After Defeating Germany
Spain defeated host Germany 81-58 to win the bronze medal at the women's FIBA World Cup on Sunday behind 22 points from Iyana Martin.

Spain Dominates Germany for Bronze
Spain secured the bronze medal at the women's FIBA World Cup in Berlin on Sunday. They defeated tournament hosts Germany with a comfortable 81-58 victory.
The Spanish team showed superior speed and sharpness right from the opening whistle. This victory marks Spain's third third place finish in the history of this tournament, following their previous bronze medal runs in 2010 and 2018.
Martin Leads the Charge
Iyana Martín was the standout player of the match. The 20 year old Martín scored 22 points to lead Spain to victory.
Germany struggled to cope with Spain's pressure, especially early in the game. Turnovers proved to be a major problem for the hosts once again. Germany committed six turnovers in the first quarter alone and finished the game with 18 turnovers in total. This followed a difficult semifinal on Saturday where they turned the ball over 25 times in their defeat against France.
Germany Misses Out on Historic Medal
Germany was hoping to win its first ever medal at the tournament. This was only their second appearance as a unified country, with their last appearance coming when they hosted the event in 1998. Looking back further, East Germany finished fourth at the tournament in 1967.
Spain had already beaten Germany by 30 points in their opening game of the tournament. Germany recovered well from that initial defeat, securing wins over Japan, Mali, South Korea, and European champions Belgium. They also became the first team in the tournament to keep France under 90 points, despite losing their semifinal match 86-64.
Spain's Road to Third Place
Spain had an eventful tournament campaign. After their opening win against Germany, they suffered a surprise defeat against Mali. However, they bounced back to beat Japan and finish top of their group.
Spain then defeated Australia in the quarterfinals before losing 76-66 to the United States in a hard fought semifinal. The United States went on to play France in the final later on Sunday.
