Staal Signs On For Another Year

The Carolina Hurricanes locked up their captain late Tuesday night. Jordan Staal signed a one year contract extension that keeps him with the franchise through the 2027 to 2028 season.

The 38 year old veteran will earn a base salary of $900,000 under the new agreement. The deal also includes a substantial $4 million signing bonus. Staal can also earn up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses, the team announced in an official statement.

Staal is coming off a highly successful season where he led Carolina to a Stanley Cup championship in June. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the postseason.

A Leader in Raleigh

During the regular season, Staal scored 20 goals and recorded 36 points across 75 games. His strong play helped Carolina win the Metropolitan Division. He stepped up even more in the playoffs, scoring eight goals and 12 points in 19 postseason games to help secure the championship.

Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky spoke highly of the veteran in a statement. Tulsky said Jordan is not only the captain but also the bedrock of the culture they have established in the organization. He added that Staal's leadership and on ice performance throughout last season, especially in the playoffs, was a primary factor in bringing the cup back to Raleigh.

Staal was originally selected second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 draft. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native enters the upcoming NHL season just one point shy of 500 for his career.
