A Historic First for the PWHL
The PWHL is taking a major step forward with the announcement of its first All-Star event. On March 7, 2027, the league will bring its top talent to Toronto for a special event at Scotiabank Arena.
This marks a massive moment for the league, which first launched its regular season back in 2024. Now, the league is ready to put its best players on display in a brand new format.
Four Teams and a New Format
The event will feature a four-team, 3-on-3 tournament. The four squads will represent PWHL Canada, PWHL USA, PWHL International, and PWHL Rookies. For the rookies squad, any player in their first PWHL season is eligible to make the team, no matter how old they are.
Each roster will have 10 players. This includes six forwards, three defenders, and one goaltender. The tournament will start with a round robin. After that, a semifinal game will decide who plays the top-ranked team in the grand final.
Fan and Player Voting
Fans will have a direct say in who makes the trip to Toronto. The All-Star players will be chosen through a mix of fan, player, and media voting. If there are extra spots to fill, the league's hockey operations department will select the reserve players.
Jayna Hefford, the PWHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations, expressed excitement about the new event. She stated that the 3-on-3 format creates an intense, fast-paced style of play. She added that the mix of teams will give both established stars and emerging talent the opportunity to shine.
Back in Toronto
Holding the event in Toronto is highly symbolic for the PWHL. The city was the site of the league's very first game in 2024, when Toronto faced off against New York.
Now, the league returns to the same city to celebrate its progress. Fans can look forward to seeing the best players in women's hockey compete in this fast-paced tournament.
