A tragedy occurred outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday night. Authorities reported that a mass shooting killed one person and injured eight others shortly after the Magic City Classic football game ended.
The annual contest brings together Alabama A&M and Alabama State. It is widely billed as the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States.
Details From Local Authorities
Birmingham Police Department Chief Michael Pickett addressed the situation following the event. He noted that the vast majority of fans, spectators, and families had already cleared out from the stadium property when the shooting happened.
The violence took place in a nearby area along Graymont Avenue. That specific location was filled with vendors who were set up for people leaving the stadium. Pickett shared his thoughts on the scene, explaining that he was very grateful that more people were not injured during the shooting.
Updates on the Victims
Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman shared updates regarding the condition of those who were shot. Among the eight wounded individuals, one person was in critical condition. The other seven injured victims were listed in stable condition following the gunfire.
Freeman also confirmed that law enforcement officers detained one person in connection with the incident. That individual was transported directly to police headquarters to undergo questioning by investigators.

In addition to detaining a suspect for questioning, law enforcement officers recovered several items from the site. Freeman stated that police found and secured multiple weapons near the scene of the violence.
