Quarterback Change for the Gators

Florida will turn to sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. for his first career start on Saturday against Texas. The Gators are preparing for a tough contest against the No. 7 Longhorns, and Jones will be leading the offense from the opening snap.

The move comes as former starter Aaron Philo continues to deal with a shoulder injury. Philo suffered the injury late in Florida's 38-19 defeat against South Carolina last Saturday. He was limited during practice sessions throughout the week and remains a game time decision on the SEC availability report. Florida will determine whether Philo can suit up as an emergency backup during pregame warmups.

Jones Steps Up Amid Roster Challenges

Jones got his first real action of the season during the fourth quarter against South Carolina after Philo went down. In that brief appearance, Jones completed 6 of 8 passes for 40 yards and threw one interception. He also managed to guide the team on a late touchdown drive before the final whistle.

The quarterback position is not the only spot on the roster affected by health concerns. Star wide receiver Vernell Brown III is dealing with a knee injury and is also listed as a game time decision for Saturday.

Slump After a Hot Start

The Gators began their campaign on a high note, putting together a 4-0 start that brought them up to No. 8 in the AP Top 25.

That momentum vanished after back to back losses to Missouri and South Carolina. Those defeats dropped Florida completely out of the Top 25 rankings as they prepare for Texas.

What it means for the next game

Florida Gators at Texas Longhorns (College Football, Sat, 17 Oct): Texas Longhorns win 78%, Florida Gators win 22%; projected score Texas Longhorns 32, Florida Gators 20. Our safest pick: Texas to win.
