Shipley exits early after first touchdown

The Philadelphia Eagles faced more trouble at running back on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Will Shipley suffered a foot injury during the contest and was ruled out from returning.

Shipley started the game because the team was already missing its top options in the backfield. Saquon Barkley was sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Tank Bigsby missed the game with an abdomen problem. Shipley took advantage of the starting role early. He scored his first career touchdown before he had to leave the field late in the first quarter.

Shipley had dealt with a foot issue recently. He appeared on the team injury report last week with a foot injury, but he was not listed on the practice report this week.

Philadelphia depth tested across the board

After Shipley exited, Dameon Pierce took over the primary running back duties for the Philadelphia offense. Carson Steele served as the backup behind Pierce.

The running back room was not the only spot hit by physical setbacks. Philadelphia entered Sunday with a long list of missing players. Barkley was out, and wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Hollywood Brown were also ruled out before the game started. Center Drew Kendall, edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, and safety Marcus Epps were inactive as well.

The team lost more players as the game went on. Defensive back Michael Carter II suffered an abdomen injury and was ruled out. Edge rusher Jalyx Hunt left the game with an ankle and knee injury. Guard Tyler Steen also left the field with an injury to his shoulder.

What it means for the next game

Philadelphia will need to monitor several roster concerns across the offense and defense as preparations begin for the upcoming week.

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (NFL, Sun, 18 Oct): Philadelphia Eagles win 50%, Carolina Panthers win 50%; projected score Philadelphia Eagles 22, Carolina Panthers 21. Our safest pick: Panthers +9.5.
